The Wheaton North Chess Team competed in the state tournament on February 13-15th in Peoria, Illinois. The Chess Team has qualified for state every year since its founding here at Wheaton North and continued the tradition with a great performance at regionals the first weekend in February. Team captain Nathan Salahi led the team to a successful competition as they were able to win 4/7 games.
During the team’s meetings, they practice playing and managing their time for tournaments. The team includes many experienced players such as freshman Zach Popham who “started playing chess when he was in second grade and joined to play at a more competitive level,” as well as players who have never played on an official team before. All of the members create a strong team that was able to come together for one last tournament of the season.
